Pearl 14"x05" Free Floating Snare

Im Vergleich mit der LUDWIG LW0814 14"X08" BLACK MAGIC und der DW PDP 14"X08" BUBINGA SNARE habe ich mich für diese Snare entschieden.

Getestet habe ich sie mit einem Aquarian TC-B Fell, wie die anderen beiden auch. Ich ziehe meine Snares ziemlich hoch.

Verarbeitung: Keine offensichtlichen Mängel. die Spannböcke sind oben teilweise schwergängig, was vermutlich an der Konstruktion mit dem langen freistehenden Bock liegt. Die Befestigung und die Mechanik des Schnarrteppichs ist einfach aber funktional.

Verpackung/Ausstattung: Trommel. Stimmschlüssel. Seidenpapier um den Kessel, Plastiktüte, Karton. Nothing fancy.

Klang: Ah, der Klang. Präzise, durchdringend, stimmig. Ich spiele sie als erste Snare ganz ohne Dämpfung, weil sie einfach schön klingt, ohne zulange oder misstönend nachzuhallen. Nicht sumpfig, wie ich das bei anderen Holzkesseln emfinde, nicht zu spitz wie bei Metall. Rim Shots sind in der Tat eine vergnügungssteuerpflichtige Angelegenheit. Rim Clicks aber sind ihre Schwäche. da muss man recht präzise auf dem Fell aufliegen, ein bischen zuweit innen oder aussen, und die klingen nicht. Sie kann als 5.5" Snare locker mit den 8" Snares mithalten, was Fülle und Druck angeht.

Sonstiges: Der eigentliche Holzkessel ist nur etwa ein Fünftel des Kessels hoch, darunter ist ein grauer Metallring, der die Spannböcke und die Schnarrmechanik hält.

Fazit: Die isses für mich!

Having mostly used shallower snares over the last years - the 14x4 and 13x3 Pearl Maple Piccolos have been my go-to snares for some time - I decided to go a bit deeper and to purchase this 14x5 Maple Free Floater.

Soundwise, this snare drum has not disappointed me at all. The fullness and richness of the maple wood is present at all volumes and the drum speaks very clearly at low volumes too! It tunes easily up or down, and has a sweet, controllable ring.

The Satin Laquer natural wood finish looks a dream, the edges all smooth, and the die-cast hoops are very sturdy. My only gripe really is the tension rods: although I´m not at all a hard hitter, I do like to spice up my backbeats with a tasty rimshot every now and then, and I found that the tension rods at the places of impact (8 and 4 o´clock) de-tune like there´s no tomorrow. That, of course, is a bit strange to happen with a drum of this calibre, but I´ll be getting some locks/tight screws etc to solve that issue.

Other than that, a highly recommendable snare drum to use in a wide variety of musical settings. Enjoy!
