When I first tried the unit I was concerned - essentially you can only have four "core" drum sounds for each song, and there are even limits selecting those drum sounds. However... the way you can then modify those drum sounds extensively, beat by beat, strike by strike is a game changer, and the way things are laid out genuinely seems to inspire creativity and freshness. If you are looking for a genuinely programmable drum machine (i.e. does not require a separate computer) which at the same time can be played "live" like a guitar pedal, then I'm not sure at present there is any alternative
