Special indeed

The SE Special incorporates several bold design choices, contrasting the timeless aesthetics that PRS are known for. It has a regular 5-way switch, in addition to 2 coil split switches for neck and bridge pickups. There is also the narrowfield pickup in centre, which is not intended to split due to the inherent clarity of the design.

This does give 12 sounds, but the majority of these fail to leave a lasting impression. The tone in general is quite bright, and lends itself well to clean or maybe soft crunch. As is to be expected for instruments in this price range, it seems that the electronics are the weak point, which is a bit ironic on a model marketed for its expanded functionality in this regard. The switches emit noticable pops upon switching, and the pots are somewhat lacking as well. The jack was loose at arrival, and kept loosening with time.

Acoustically, it's a bit louder due to the semi-hollow design, which also contributes greatly to the visuals. What sets this one apart is that it includes a vibrato bridge as well, although this would need a major setup to keep tune out of the box. The nut was not cut well, which contributed to tuning instability.

In terms of playability, the neck is quite thick compared to "modern C", and the frets are very short, but well-made. It has a rather round radius at 10".

The visuals are great, although it's readily apparent it's a veneered top. The visuals are elegant for this price.

In a live situation, the various pickup configurations were not distinct enough to warrant their use, but this may be different for studio use. The narrowfield is nice, and there is a good balance between the pickups.

All in all, the shortcomings in the circuitry and setup leaves some aspects to be desired at this price, which is why I refunded mine.

Großartige Gitarre - großartiger Thomann-Service!

Ueber die Gitarre muss man nicht viel sagen. Die Verarbeitung und der Klang sind schlichtweg fantastisch! Sie ist sehr vielseitig einsetzbar, wenngleich ich finde, dass sie ihre Muskeln eher für sanfte, volle Klänge spielen lässt. Harte Metal-Riffs gehen auch, aber das fühlt sich bei ihr eher falsch an ;-)

******6 von 5 Sternen gehen aber an den Thomann-Service. Ich habe rund 3 Wochen auf den Weitertransport von DHL gewartet und mich dann an den Thomann-Support gewandt. Dieser hat ohne lange Zögern mir eine Ersatzgitarre auf Vertrauen geschickt. Diese Kulanz hat mich fast umgehauen. Sie können nichts für den seltsamen Transportweg von DHL, wollten mich aber auch nicht noch länger warten lassen. Solche Moves sind wahrscheinlich EIN Grund für deren Erfolg.

12 sonorités sous la main

C'est ma 3e PRS... Celle-ci est une sorte de "couteau-suisse" sonore. 3 micros humbuckers, switch 5 positions et split-coil sur la totale, soit 12 sonorités. Du "Fendérien" au "Gibsonien". Ces 3 humbuckers sont excellents (comme sur mes 2 autres PRS), fins et puissant, définis et péchûs. Tous les styles peuvent être abordés. Du Surf au Blues, du Jazz au Metal, elle peut le faire ! Côté finition, RAS. Belle et bien finie comme toute les guitares de cette gamme. Je la recommande sans retenue.

Ich denke jeder der nach einer hervorragend verarbeiteten Gitarre mit x-fachen soundmöglichkeiten sucht wird mit dieser in Asien gefertigten PRS SE Gitarre alles finden. Ich habe mich aufgrund dieser Erfahrung entschlossen das in US gefertigte S2 Modell zu kaufen, dass noch um einen Ticken besser ist (ästhetik , Low Turn Humbucker, und dem US NF Pickup). Zu bedenken ist, dass die beiden preislich 100% auseinander liegen. Deshalb habe ich mir zuerst die SE gekauft und bin davon keineswegs enttäuscht worden. Great Job Paul!!!
