For adding highs.
The PRE knob adds highs. When using my dark sounding guitar with my dark sounding cab, this is very helpfull.
The distortion starts to get muddy when the GAIN knob passes 12 o'clock (with my guitar). No problem for me, because I play more in the edge of break-up area, around 10 o'clock, sounds good.
Not expensive, can be usefull when more highs are needed. I like it.
