Did you think that with cordless headphones you will get rid of cords? Wrong. In case of YH-WL500 headphones, yes, but only around your head. Due to peripheral supporting equipment you must use two cords - one to bypass sound between your instrument and the separate transmitter module. Plus, the transmitter module also needs a separate power supply cord. Even though my Yamaha keyboard is equipped with Bluetooth, despite my multiple attempts it refused to directly connect to, face-to-face, Yamaha headphones, it remained “blind” (?!). The headphones can receive sound only indirectly through the additional, separate transmitter bypass module (In a photo, it looks like a stand and headphones charger). Every time they need about 10 of seconds to connect. Indeed, practically there is ZERO SOUND DELAY (why to use high-brow, academic word “latency” ?). By description, headphones frequency is standard: 20 - 20.000 Hz. I do not know how it would handle Mahler symphonies, but when it does it to my keyboard, the sound is delivered perfectly, sonorous and juicy; naturally defined and spacious. In comparisons with similarly priced headphones the battery durability (9 hrs) is short; some competitors cordless headphones reach almost 3 times longer working time. The design leaves few things to be desired. I have middle-sized ears but they hardly fit within inner surrounding ear pads. The white side plastic “sideburns” are not god idea, they look tatty.
The head-wear feeling is rather comfortable.
I find its high price is chiefly in an instrument's sound reproduction zero delay. With such novelty feature hardly has it any market competition. Obviously, no delay (latency) is its main trump card. Still, I find this model an evolutionary half-solution, waiting for the higher model without a compromise transmitter module, CONNECTING DIRECTLY , without delay, with an instrument’s Bluetooth.
MY PERSONAL DETAILED ESTIMATE
Sound: 5. Technical solution: 4. Design :4. Head-on comfort: 4. Attached 2 cords quality (length & width): 2 ( I instantly replaced them with longer and thicker ones). Overall value for money: 3,5.
Unfortunately, on their page Yamaha producers do not describe roughly estimated headphones built-in battery total lifespan.
The last , but not the least. Has an independent RESEARCH been done on influence of high frequency Bluetooth WAVES ON BRAN - is it carcinogenic-safe and so?
THE PUNCHLINE.
I have Yamaha YAMAHA HPH-150B When it comes to tailored exclusively for an instrument connection (they have a cord) they are the undisputed market winner! I compared them with significantly more expensive Kawai and Audio Technica headphones , YAMAHA HPH-150B scored as better and as equal. (I am using only the instrument sound transmission criterion.) They are very light and when you put them on, you forget about wearing them , as if a humming bird sat on your head. With their sound quality (40 mm speakers) they fully equal YH-WL500 sound quality.
So, before buying YH-WL500 think twice. Would you prefer to get read a cord around your head, OR to to still have this cord, but with double lighter “headgear” stuff, over three times cheaper, with lower energy consumption and doubtlessly higher longevity?
