This little thing turned out to be way more fun than I expected. While it may look very basic it actually quite a few features.
If you get this I recommend checking the manual before trying to play, it tells you everything you need to know the BEAT.
Pros:
- 4 drum kits 12 samples each with their own style
- monophonic synth bass with 4 different sounds and 3 octave range
- ability to record, playback and overdub patterns (it quantises it as well, so you have to be just kind of on beat)
- a low pass filter effect with some attack and release
- storage for 4 different patterns
- the ability to shuffle the pattern with beat repeat
- the ability to transpose the bassline
- compact and battery operated
- click track
Cons:
- the programming proces can be a little annoying sometimes (you can't input notes one by one into the sequencer, you have to record in real time)
- You can't mix the drums. If you think the snare is too loud, too bad, you'll have to record it separately.
- It's ONLY battery operated, unless you want to mod it.
- No external CV control
- No way to accurately input the tempo
- No way to combine sounds from different drum kits unless you record them separately.
- the pattern is only 2 4/4 bars long (32 steps). You can get around this by switching between multiple stored patterns or recording at half tempo.
All in all, while it is limited, it can create some nice beats and is really fun to play with. I think the BEAT is well worth it's price.
