A fantastic, highly responsive overdrive for bass
The Empress Drive turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. I wanted an overdrive that would add warmth, character and a slightly “amp-like” feel without turning the bass into a heavily distorted sound or acting like another preamp. The Empress delivers this extremely well.
What impressed me most is its dynamics and response to playing technique. It reacts beautifully to how hard you play, so you can go from a clean, slightly enhanced tone to a warm, harmonically rich overdrive simply by changing your attack. It feels very natural under the fingers and never sounds compressed or artificial.
On bass, the low end remains solid and well controlled, while the overdrive adds a really pleasant harmonic character and a sense of depth. It can be subtle and almost transparent, but there is plenty of gain available when you want a more pronounced sound. The blend control is particularly useful for retaining the fundamental and keeping the bass articulate.
I also really appreciate how different it is from modern, more aggressive distortion pedals. In my setup, the Empress Drive works as the organic, dynamic overdrive, while the Darkglass Microtubes X provides a much tighter and more modern distortion character. They complement each other extremely well rather than overlapping.
The controls are very musical and the pedal is easy to dial in. It also responds exceptionally well to different pickup configurations and playing styles, which makes it much more versatile than I initially expected.
After spending quite a lot of time testing it, I can honestly say that it has become an important part of my signal chain. If you are looking for a warm, dynamic and expressive overdrive for bass rather than a generic “distortion sound”, the Empress Drive is an excellent choice.
Highly recommended.
