Kawai ES-920 B

As a beginner with just 5 months of experience, I'm afraid that my review won't bring much to your lives, but I'm blown away with this instrument.
It has a beautiful, highly customizable sampled sound with a well developed, easy to use PianoRemote app. Action is lighter than Roland's PHA-50 and far more responsive - Roland FP-90x felt heavy and sluggish in comparison. It feels like there is not that much depth after you press-down a key and the keys bounce a lot upon release, both of which I found distracting at first, but quickly got used to it. There are visible jumps in height between certain white keys, but again that's just minor nit-picking.
Build quality is great, and I don't get how people can have problems with fingerprints - I don't have that issue at all. I don't travel with it, but I appreciate the instrument's weight, as it doesn't feel like it will break the furniture while playing it.
For the first time in my life, I'm actually in love... and it even says 'Goodbye' to me, when I have to go away for a bit.

From the perspective of a guy who began the deep journey into piano world since last couple of years this instrument is a wholesome. Before I have had some experience with some entry level DPs and mid-range. But obviously my ES920 is one step ahead of them.

Pros (ofc everything is subjective):
- lovely action. Personally for me who has never played real concert piano this weight grade of the keys is nearly perfect. It's really easy for stuff like tremolos, trills etc. But as it was already mentioned by other customers it's lighter than PHA-50 in Roland FP90X and NWX in Yamaha P-515
- samples of pianos here are astonishing. Kawai did great job with sampling their flagship instruments SK-EX, SK-5, EX. Worth to mention that you can customize behavior of the sound and respond of the instrument in 19 parameters of Virtual Technician either directly through the menu buttons or via mobile app.
- well made and responsive pedals. I've bought my DP with F302 pedal unit and HM5 furniture stand. By default it comes with F-10H sustain pedal which is also very robust. Also you can get it with triple pedal block GFP-3 as an alternative, which I did later and quality is same durable and responsive.
- rhythm section will be fun to play with.

cons:
- action. yeah it might sound controversial from me according to my first point, but for some people (especially with real piano playing experience) this action might be too light and plastic feeling. Sound of bouncing keys might be too loud and annoying for people who practice in late time.
- lack of features, not various sound bank and incomplete General MIDI. I mean come on guys. This is a premium portable DP and you're not able to put there some more other sounds and features?! I mainly play on this instrument piano sounds only, for the rest I just connect it to VSTs.

To sum all of the mentioned above I'd definitely recommend this for buying. And thanks Thomann btw. You guys are rock!

I’ve tried many brands, but Kawai remains my favourite. The sound is warm and rich, very close to an acoustic piano.

For concerts like weddings or private events, I connect it to my mixer and PA system using stereo jacks. It would be even better if it had XLR outputs, but the current sound quality is excellent and holds up beautifully in live settings.

Last year, I experienced an issue when playing in direct sunlight: the pedal would stop working when exposed to bright light, but started functioning again as soon as a cloud passed. This is apparently due to a light sensor in the pedal. I returned the unit to Thomann for repair, but the problem was not resolved. Thomann then recommended that I contact Kawai directly. According to them, it is normal for the pedal not to work under direct sunlight. We eventually opened it at home, placed black tape over the sensor, and now it works perfectly. I still don’t understand why it was designed this way.

The key action feels authentic, and the build quality is solid and reliable, ideal for frequent gigging.
