Sonicware deconstruct MINIMAL

After spending some time with the unit, I am very satisfied with the unit, particularly when it comes to its build quality, sound, and above all its layout and interface.

The user interface is probably the MINIMAL’s biggest strength. Everything feels very intuitive and well thought out, making it possible to get started quickly without constantly reaching for the manual. The learning curve is remarkably gentle, which makes the MINIMAL an excellent entry point into DAWless music production. That said, I don't think it should be dismissed as a beginner's instrument: there is enough depth and flexibility here to make it interesting for more experienced users as well.

The sound quality is also very impressive for such a compact instrument. It has a distinctive character and provides plenty of possibilities for experimentation and sound design, while remaining straightforward to operate. Combined with the excellent physical layout, this makes the MINIMAL an instrument that encourages hands-on interaction rather than menu diving.

Another aspect I really appreciate is the online documentation. Having clear and accessible documentation makes a big difference, especially when learning a new piece of hardware, and Sonicware has done a good job in this area.

There are, however, a few areas where I think the MINIMAL could be improved.

The main one is connectivity. The use of mini-jacks for the audio and MIDI connections is understandable given the unit's compact size, but I would definitely have preferred full-size 1/4" outputs and more conventional MIDI connections. For a device aimed at DAWless setups, having more robust and standard connectivity would make it considerably easier to integrate into a larger hardware rig.

The USB-C connection for audio is a very welcome feature, but it is a shame that USB-C cannot also be used to power the unit. Being able to run the MINIMAL from a USB power bank would make it even more practical for portable setups and live use. The fact that it can run from six AA batteries is certainly useful, but an integrated rechargeable lithium battery would have been an even better solution and would have made the unit feel considerably more modern.

I would also welcome some form of expandable sample storage. The ability to add a memory card, for example, would make the instrument much more flexible for users who want to build larger sample libraries or use it as the centre of a more extensive portable setup.

Overall, though, these are relatively minor criticisms of what I consider to be a very successful instrument. The Sonicware de:construct MINIMAL combines a compact and portable form factor with a genuinely enjoyable workflow, good sound quality, and an exceptionally approachable interface.
