Strymon Big Sky MX Dual Engine Reverb

For this price I was expecting to get really good reverbs. Something to maybe replace my Empress Reverb that is starting to feel dated. I bought the Empress at the time, because it was better sounding and more versatile than the Big Sky, but surprisingly I still think it is!

Of course the Big Sky has a unique sound and if that's what you're after, I would recommend picking up the original second-hand for cheap.

This pedal is 90% the old dated algorithms packaged differently with a premium price tag. I am not interested in running two not-so-great algorithms in parallel.

That they made this more expensive than the Mercury X, without adding a ton of greatly improved algorithms, seems absolutely delusional to me.

For a bit more money you can get the Chase Bliss CMX (also mostly Meris), which is my favorite, because of the simplicity / UX.

I'm also holding on to my Empress Reverb, because it can sound very different and still good enough. It is ridiculous that a 10-year old reverb, costing half the price, is still beating this thing.

Zu aller erst: Ich bin ein Strymon fanboy! Auf meinem kleinen board habe ich bereits ein Volante und ein NightSky, jetzt das BigSky MX. Das MX hat das was ich an Strymon so liebe, die Verbindung des Gitarren- mit dem Effektsound. Irgendwie schaffen sie es immer wieder, dan man das Gefühl beim Spielen bekommt, dass beides organisch verschmilzt. Ich hatte ein H90 und dort hatte ich immer das Gefühl, dass ich einen separaten Gitarren- und einen separaten Effektsound hatte, es sind die zwei Dinge für meinen Geschmack nie 100%ig zusammengekommen. Ich finde auch das Feature der zwei Reverbs extrem gut und hilfreich. Mache werden nicht zwei Reverbs hintereinander benötigen. Aber durch die Magneto-Engine (Tape-Delay) ist es zum Beispiel extrem hilfreich, wenn man die Effekte parallel (oder gesplittet auf links und rechts) laufen läßt und sie somit nicht verwaschen. Und es läßt sich damit auch in nullkommanichts ein wet-dry-Rig basteln. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass das so komfortabel ist und bei mir so viel Anwendung findet. Super ist jetzt auch, dass durch die Magneto-Engine ein ausgewachsenes Tape-Delay mit an Board ist, somit ist mein Bedarf erstmal für 90% abgedeckt. Die anderen 10% special effects kommen jetzt von einem Line& HX One. Meine Verbesserungswünsche gelten allein den Magneto-Features, sie habe ich auch schon an Strymon gemeldet: Bitte Tap-Tempo, Delay-time über den ersten (und nicht den letzten) Repeat definieren, Delay-Time auch in BPM und Notenwert einstellbar und zu guter Letzt noch eine Synchronisationsmöglichkeit, wenn man zwei Magnetos links und rechts fährt. Ansonsten: Daumen hoch, es ist jeden Euro wert!!!

J'utilise la big Sky MX principalement sur mon clavier Osmose pour une profondeur de son incomparable. La big Sky a également redonné vie à mes anciens synthés, JV1080 et DX7, en sublimant et magnifiant les sons d'origine. Enfin, je l'utilise aussi via ableton pour mes mix avec le plugin de retour d'effet intégré. Enchanté par la qualité du son et la qualité de fabrication, je lorgne désormais sur un delay Strymon, style El Capistan pour compléter au mieux ce bijou Big Sky MX.
