Stereo granular sampler and audio processor
Four parallel stereo tracks, each with a signal chain consisting of five processing stages: Material, Granular, Filter, Colour and Space
Material: Signal source for further sound processing, e.g. a sample from the internal memory, recording of a new sample, overdub and sound-on-sound loops

Granular: Four second audio buffer with 128 grains and control over size, distribution, shape and pitch of the grains
Filter: 48-band resonator filter bank for wide-ranging sound shaping and emulation of classic low-pass, band-pass and high-pass filter characteristics
Colour: Destructive effect block with dual-band distortion, bit crusher, compressor and noise generator
Space: Stereo reverb and delay effect with freeze function
Four freely assignable modulators per track – each modulator can function as an LFO, random source or ADSR envelope and can be assigned to multiple modulation destinations
Master section with 4-channel mixer
DJ filter (low-pass / high-pass) per channel and summing compressor

A powerful sampler with huge potential—still a work in progress

The S-4 is a great instrument with a lot of potential, but it’s clear that it’s not quite finished yet. Three of the buttons are still labeled “Coming Soon,” likely to be activated with the next firmware update (v2). However, there’s little transparency about when that will actually happen. Communication is mostly limited to their Discord channel, which might not be ideal for everyone.

That said, the interface is very intuitive, and the granular engine, ring modulation, and sound shaping options are impressive. However, there’s still no way to save your settings as a reusable template—only as a project—so it’s not as flexible for performance or iterative work as it could be.

Another downside is the relatively high noise floor on the analog outputs. On the bright side, the 10 inputs and 10 outputs over USB-C are fantastic for routing, even if the mapping options could use more flexibility.

Overall, the S-4 could become one of the best hardware tools for working with field recordings and samples, but in its current state, it feels incomplete—which makes its price tag feel a bit high.

I’m honestly still debating whether to keep it or not. Some days I love it; other days, I really don’t.

Après en avoir entendu les louanges de la version 2.x dans divers tests, je reçois la bête... Je teste un peu : Première fonction de que je teste : le crossfade dans une boucle. Ca clique 2x sur 3. Je l'ai remis dans sa boite et renvoyé immédiatement.

Dommage de se louper sur une fonction aussi basique. Sur leur discord, la liste des bugs rencontrés fait plusieurs kilomètres de long.

Dommage, les outils pour sculpter le spectre sont redoutables; l'interface est superbe, mais ça ne fait pas tout. Les grains sont piochés au pif dans une zone qu'on ne peut pas vraiment délimiter, au contraire d'un 1010 Lemonbox ou un Tasty Chips GR-1.

Un potentiel énorme mais un logiciel pas fini. A voir comment ce dernier évoluera sur le long terme mais en l'état, c'est non.

Après installation de l'OS1.2.2 sans aucun souci, le S4 est absolument à la hauteur de mes attentes !
La prise en main est intuitive, le mode d'emploi, en anglais, très clair et complet , est à peine utile . La gestion des pistes est simple, le routage clair et précis, les modules de traitement puissants. Le sampling est tout à fait à la hauteur, micro intégré un peu juste cependant. Le paramétrage du MIDI est simplissime.
Bref, un instrument très bien pensé , très musical , aux possibilités immenses. Un régal

Der Torso S4 ist ein Kreativtool und macht sehr abgefahrene Soundwelten.
Es kommen auch regelmäßig Updates wie aktuell das 2.0.2

Leider gibt es auch Schattenseiten.
Im Update von 1 auf 2 sind grundlegende Funktionen der Tape Machine weggefallen und es waren neue Bugs.

Vieles ind nun im 2.0.2 behoben.

Was mich persönlich nicht gefällt das bei Meinem Gerät der Encoder nach 2 Monaten schon nicht mehr geht. DAs ist auch der an und Ausschalter und er ist zum ZOOMEn und für das Tempo zuständig. Daher der Punktabzug bei der Verarbeitung. Auch ist das Gerät nicht grade Preiswert. Es macht aber denn noch sehr viel spass und bringt einem neuen Soundwelten ins Studio oder auf die Bühne.
