Four freely assignable modulators per track - each modulator can function as an LFO, random source or ADSR envelope and can be assigned to multiple modulation destinations
Master section with 4-channel mixer
DJ filter (low-pass / high-pass) per channel and summing compressor

A unique device for sound experiments. Its real strength is in modulation and its sound engines, as well as the flexibility of its settings. A big plus is that it works as an audio interface, so you can record everything track by track into a DAW, or send audio from the DAW into it for processing. It’s fully self-contained: you can make a full track using its four tracks.

On the downside, this is my second unit — I returned the first one because it constantly clicked and had lots of glitch noise. This one has almost no noise or glitches, but occasional odd behavior still happens. Despite that, I really love it for its looks, interface design, and overall capabilities.

Toll, aber ...

Hardware fühlt sich mittelmäßig an. Der Hauptregler ist bei meinem Gerät leider unbrauchbar (die Menüpunkte sind nur durch Zufall erreichbar). Insgesamt wirkt das Gerät ein bisschen wie ein Model:Cycles von der Haptik und Ästhetik her. Für den Preis hätte ich mehr erwartet.

Den Workflow dagegen find ich großartig. Ich hab seit Jahren ein Gerät gesucht, mit dem ich Sounds (live) entwickeln kann, anstatt sie zu programmieren — und das gut mit meinem MakeNoise Easel Setup harmoniert. Und wo ich mir nicht ständig denke, das wäre in einer DAW aber einfacher und schneller gegangen. Klares Konzept, logische Bedienung, gute Ergebnisse. Überflüssig zu erwähnen, dass das Ding überhaupt nicht so klingen muss, wie in den eher Ambient-lastigen Videos.

Weitere negative Punkte (abgesehen vom kaputten Regler):

— Kein MIDI-Thru. Verstehe ich nicht, bedeutet in meiner Praxis einen recht mühsamen Umweg über ein Audio-Interface. Bisschen ärgerlich, wird hoffentlich per Firmware-Update behoben.
— Für Live-Looping eingeschränkt brauchbar. Ich hab's nicht geschafft, zB exakt 2 Bars auszunehmen mit dem korrekten Startpunkt (die Länge ist richtig, aber der Startpunkt ist falsch trotz Anleitung vom Torso-Support).
— Tracks können nicht auf die Kopfhörer geschaltet werden, dh ein vorhören ist unmöglich.
— Es gibt "bleeding", wenn 2 Mono-Synths verwendet werden.

Das Gerät geht also erstmal zurück. Ich werde einen zweiten Versuch starten und hoffe dabei auf halbwegs fehlerfreie Hardware.

Une dinguerie !

J'ai pris la version blanc cassé qui est de toute beauté question de goût me dirait vous. Le concept de la machine est juste dingue, on travaille dessus rapidement et on obtient des résultats dingues aussi rapidement. Je fais une sorte d'ambient/glitch avec... Les modulations sont génial, le mode performance et difficile à dompter mais foutrement efficace aussi bref j'ai attendu que le firmware soit au mieux pour l'acheter et en l'état c'est juste incroyable pour moi. Le seul bémol serait les encodeurs rotatifs qui semble un peu léger pour la manipulation intensive mais je réglerais ce petit problème avec un contrôleur 4x4 pour envoyer sans peur !
Une machine moderne avec une super interface ça change des écrans de calculatrice des années 90 !
Je l'adore c'est que du kiffe !

Que ce soit comme un effet externe ou workstation, c'est très efficace et amusant. Pas de bug apparent dans le firmware (2.0.3) Des Plugins iront plus loin en granulaire , mais c'est bien le mélange des différents modules de coloration et avec le granulaire (et les modulations) qui rendent le Torso S4 très pertinent.
