Walrus Audio Fundamental Overdrive

For years I've been looking for an overdrive that doesn't necessarily change the general frequency response and tone, but instead just adds some gain and retains the same sound profile. It was driving me crazy that this option was always considered as something premium and expensive (think King of Tone or Timmy). Now Walrus came up with an overdrive that does just that and on top of that it's well built, looks amazing and is really affordable for the quality. I've put it on my pealboard and it immediately became my favourite low gain drive (I use it as low gain, but it gets VERY dirty if you increase the gain). The only con I can think of are the sliders. They are very good quality but I just find knobs a lot more practical. Other than that I find the pedal fantastic.

When a boutique brand releases a "budget" line, we expect cut corners but not this one.

If you are looking for a versatile drive that slides (literally) right into any mix, read on.

The only minor issue: Sliders?! They are surprisingly stiff (in a good way). You won't accidentally kick your settings out of place. It is incredibly easy to see your settings from standing height.

The Sound: 3 Flavors of Dirt
The magic here is the toggle switch. You aren't just getting one sound; you're getting three distinct voicings:

Smooth Mode: This is your classic "transparent" drive. It reminds me of a Blues Breaker style. It doesn't color your tone too much; it just adds that creamy, edge-of-breakup sparkle.

Crunch Mode: This brings the silicon diode clipping. It’s more compressed and aggressive. Perfect for modern rock rhythm tones.

Bright Mode: If you play with a dark amp or humbuckers, this is the secret weapon. It cuts through the mix without being ice-picky. I get the impression that is to be used only when your sound is dark.

Versatility: It stacks incredibly well. I put a sd before or Eros pedal and it handled both perfectly.

The Noise Floor: It is dead silent. No hum, even at higher gain settings.

The Price: Getting Walrus Audio build quality for this price point feels like a cheat code.

Ich habe ein übersichtliches Overdrive gesucht, was ich zum anpusten des Zerrkanals meines Two Notes Le Lead Preamps brauchte. Natürlich kennt man da mittlerweile die gängigen Klassiker, doch für den Preis ein Pedal von einer bekannten Boutique-Schmiede, dann auch noch vollständig produziert in den USA, da musste ich zuschlagen.
Und siehe da, das Teil macht komplett Spaß. Ich verwende größtenteils den Smooth- und den Crunch-Modus, die sich meiner Meinung nach nur im Zerrgrad unterscheiden. Es kommt im Cleankanal ein wirklich sehr warmer Overdrive rüber, der nicht zu stark in den eigentlich Ton eingreift, während man der sowieso schon übersteuerten Zerre nochmal den letzten Rest gibt, ohne dass der Sound an Kontur verliert. Heute Abend wird das ganze im Bandkontext getestet, jedoch sehe ich hier keinen Grund, warum das Pedal irgendwie untergehen sollte.
Macht Bock und zudem sind die Einstellmöglichkeiten wirklich ein Hingucker.
