Harley Benton SC Special Hybrid SGM

The guitar arrived very well packaged. It was in tune right out of the box 🙂 I only lowered the bridge slightly and set the intonation at the 12th fret. The body, neck, and headstock are in perfect condition. The frets are smooth—no sharp edges. It was very well set up. The locking tuners hold their tuning well. I might switch to 11-50 strings with a wound G-string; that’s what I prefer, though the stock ones are decent. The finish is excellent, featuring a beautiful metallic color with shifting shades of green. I really like the sound of the P90 and the humbucker. It sounds perfect in D tuning! The tone and volume pots work great and do exactly what they should. Another beautiful guitar for my collection. I’d recommend it to anyone 💪💥 My rating: 10/10 🙃

The guitar arrived with a poor set up (high action & badly intonated) which was quickly remedied. However, on initial tuning, the top E string snapped. Nevertheless, withing an hour of unboxing the guitar it was playing like a much more expensive instrument.

The bridge humbucker sounds muscular and beefy and, with a dirty sound dialed in, it cleans up nicely via the guitar's volume control. The P90 delivers all the tones you'd expect, from a jazzy purr through to a honking bark - imagine a tele neck pickup on steroids and you're in the right ball park. I can't see any need to replace these pickups or the pots, to be honest.

The neck, with its silky satin finish, is the star of the show on this guitar. It feels immediately comfortable and makes you want to just keep playing that little bit longer. However, given that Harley Benton offer an SG copy for about £250 which has stainless steel frets, I think this is a missed opportunity here. I would have gladly paid a similar price for this guitar had it had this premium feature. Maybe an idea for a future model, Harley Benton? Maybe offer it in a nice burst finish too?

As a one time owner of a much missed Gordon Smith GS2, this £169 guitar reminds me of that lovely instrument which is a very good thing.

I saw a you tuber playing a single cut with the Humbucker/P90 configuration and wanted one.(A Shergold Provocateur). I quickly discovered they were largely unavailable and outside my price range. Green one and the guitar has lived up to and gone beyond me expectations. Solid, professionally put together guitar, intonation spot on out of the box, great sounds from the pick ups. I love it. Vor einigen Jahren habe ich die Krautster von Nik Huber bei einem Händler in Nürnberg hängen gesehen und war verliebt. Da ich mir sicher bin, dass mir meine Frau die Scheidung einreicht, wenn ich mit einer Gitarre im Preisbereich von 4.000 - 5.000 Euro aufschlage, sollte es lange ein Traum bleiben.
Letzte Woche sehe ich dann, dass Thomann mit Ihrer Eigenmarke eine detailgetreue Kopie für sagenhafte 199€ auf den Markt bringt.
Keine 2 Minuten überlegt und das Teil in Sheerwood Green bestellt.

Vor 2 Tagen da Lieferung, wie immer sehr schnell und gut verpackt.

Erster Eindruck nach dem Auspacken, "nicht schlecht".
Griffbrett war ausgetrocknet wie die Wälder und Wiesen aufgrund der Dürre. Saitenlage hmmm naja mit fast 2,5mm an der hohen e-Saite mir ca. 1mm zu hoch.
Ansonsten ist die Verarbeitung sensationell gut und für die Preisklasse einfach überragend und man fragt sich echt wie das möglich ist.
Bünde 1a abgerichtet, keine Deadspots , Sattel super gut gekerbt. Tuner laufen angenehm. Hier habe ich bei Fender Gitarren insbesondere der Vintera Serie deutlich schlechtere Modelle in den Händen gehabt, was Sattelkerbung und Bünde betrifft.
Auch die Hölzer sehen 1a aus und wurden super verarbeitet und verklebt. Keine Bearbeitungsspuren sichtbar und alles glatt wie ein Babypopo.
Auch kleine Details wie die Filzunterlage am Gurthalter sind in der Preisklasse alles andere als normal.

Kurz überlegt und gedacht, die Grundlage passt auf jeden Fall und daher Werkzeug und Pflegemittel rausgeholt, Saiten runter und dem Griffbrett erstmal eine ordentliche Kur verpasst. In dem Zuge noch die Wraparound-Bridge (die in Natura deutlich besser und hochwertiger aussieht als auf den Bildern) tiefergelegt, sodass nun auch die Saitenlage passt. Mein Test 1,5mm Plek bleibt an der tiefen e-Saite gerade so hängen am 12.Bund .... passt ohne das es schnarrt - 1a.
Über Nacht ist auch das Griffbrett schön nachgedunkelt und ist fast schwarz, was optisch einfach extrem hochwertig und stimmig wirkt, weil Kopfplatte, Griffbrett und Schlagbrett nahezu einen Farbton hat.
Optik schön und gut aber wie klingt das Teil ?
Beim direkten Anstöpseln etwas enttäuschend, hier habe ich mir beim P90 etwas mehr "grollen" gewünscht. Aber auch hier kurz den Schraubendreher angesetzt und die P90 eine Umdrehung herausgeschraubt und siehe da es grollt :-)
Kommt nicht ganz an P90 einer Gibson ran aber hey wir reden hier über eine Gitarre unter 200€ von daher Jammern auf sehr hohem Niveau.

Fazit: mit etwas Nachbearbeitung, was man eigentlich bei fast jeder Gitarre macht, erhält man eine Gitarre, die es locker mit Gitarren deutlich höherer Preisklassen aufnehmen kann und im Blindtest vermutlich für die ein oder andere Überraschung sorgen würde.
Kaufen, solange es das Teil noch gibt !!!
