Thomann MB-20 C Valve Trombone
This instrument has exceeded my expectations.
Fit and finish is excellent. The braces are solid and neatly soldered. The instrument has a high polish and the lacquer is free of drips, runs or other defects. No dents, no scratches. The valves and slides are tight and smooth.
It is fairly common that the fifth partial on valved brass instruments is flat. The fifth partial on the instrument I received is surprisingly in tune. The intonation on other notes is within norms for valved brass instruments.
The sound samples for this instrument do not adequately convey the character of its sound. The instrument I received is capable of a full range of expression from soft and mellow to crisp and bright. Mouthpieces, of course, have a significant effect on the tonal characteristics of brass instruments. The included mouthpiece is marked 6 1/2 AL. It is satisfactory, but I think a shallower mouthpiece would be a better companion for this trombone.
It is worthy to note that, prior to shipping, these instruments are inspected at Thomann and the box is resealed with a quality assurance sticker.
I am very happy with this instrument. It sounds good, it looks good, it works good, and it is fun to play. And considering it comes with a molded foam case, I think it is a remarkable value.
