Thomann BR 801GP Superior Baritonhorn

Recently having purchased a Bb Tenorhorn from Thomann convinced me that as a French Horn player playing Baritone might be more suited to me that Eb Tenor (Alto) Horn in a Brass Band.

I didn't want to spend thousands on my first Baritone so thought I would try a cheaper one from here.

I am truly stunned at the quality of the instrument.

Well made, excellent intonation out of the box.

I'd certainly recommend Thomann instruments.

I will also say that the customer service is second to none. They really have been able to deal with the issues of Brexit better than most companies in the UK.

La finition est belle,, mais la mécanique est déplorable!
les pistons 1 et 2 fonctionnent très mal ou pas du tout...le 3ème fonctionne alléatoirement, seul le N°4 fonctionne à peu près bien.
Il a fallu finalement 6 mois pour arriver à un rodage des pistons mais qui demandent encore beaucoup d'entretien
C'est très dommage car l'instrument est de belle facture et sa justesse est convenable sans plus...


Dans quelle usine et dans quel pays cet instrument a t-il été fabriqué?

Möchte von Trompete auf das ansatzmäßig "leichtere" Baritonhorn umsteigen und habe dieses Instrument wegen des sehr günstigen Preises zum Üben gekauft. Meine Erwartungen waren nicht allzu hoch eingestellt, bin aber positiv überrascht über die handwerkliche Qualität des Instruments. Material und Finish sind makellos. Die Züge sind perfekt einwandfrei beweglich, die Ventile sind leichtgängig. Die Lötstellen und der Sitz der Wasserklappen sind makellos.
Ich bin mit der Qualität des Instruments rundum zufrieden. Über das Verhalten bei längerem Gebrauch kann ich natürlich noch keine Aussage machen, denke aber, dass es angesichts der Wertigkeit des Materials und der Verarbeitung keine Probleme geben wird. Für Bläser, die als Nichtprofis auch mal ein Baritonhorn spielen mögen, ist dies das ideale Instrument.

I recently purchased a baritone horn from Thomann. While the instrument overall felt well-made, there were a couple of characteristics that impacted my playing experience.

The first was the instrument's bore size. Having primarily played the euphonium, the smaller bore of the baritone resulted in a noticeably different tonal quality. This might not be an issue for all players, but for those accustomed to a euphonium's warmth and sound, it's worth considering.

More concerning was the intonation in the lower register. The notes were consistently flat by about half a semitone, and unfortunately, adjustments in my embouchure weren't enough to compensate entirely. This made playing in the lower range quite challenging. But here's my pick: I still recommend this instrument if you know you won't often play in the low register, you are ready to have compromises in the intonation or just looking for a backup horn.

Despite these issues, I have to commend Thomann's excellent customer support. When I contacted them about the intonation problem, they were prompt and professional. They arranged for the return of the instrument for a thorough inspection by their experts and, in the meantime, suggested I try their BR 802 model.

Overall, while this horn is likely a good option for beginners, players transitioning from euphonium should be aware of the tonal shift due to the smaller bore. Additionally, the intonation issue I encountered in the lower register seemed inherent to the instrument itself rather than something I could adjust on the fly.

Thankfully, Thomann's exceptional support helped navigate this situation. Their willingness to inspect the instrument and suggest an alternative model reassured me of their commitment to customer satisfaction.
